Why does it sometimes take so long to get the GPS signal

The very first time you start up your Mio device it could take up to 10 minutes before you have GPS reception. This is normal and is due to the fact that no internal GPS data is present.

Afterwards the GPS reception will be a lot quicker. The time it takes to find a GPS signal will increase in case you move your device without it being switched on. This is because it has to look for satellites from its new position. If you do not move the device while it is switched off, it will remember where to look for the satellites and find the GPS signal faster.

Also the weather conditions and the environment around you can influence the gps fix.

TMC - where is tmc available

TMC is generally available for free across Europe. In the UK, the service is not available for free. In France you have free and payable TMC. Both quality and frequency of the TMC messages may vary per country.
